How to convert hours and minutes to decimal
A decimal hour is a fraction of an hour written as a decimal, so 15 minutes is a quarter of an hour, or 0.25. Payroll systems usually want hours this way because it makes the pay math simple: 7.5 hours times $20.00 is $150.00, with no minutes to juggle.
Hours and minutes to decimal
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the answer to the hours. For 7 hours 50 minutes, 50 / 60 = 0.8333, so the total is 7.83 hours to two places.
Decimal to hours and minutes
Multiply the part after the decimal point by 60. For 8.2 hours, 0.2 x 60 = 12, so it is 8 hours 12 minutes. If the answer is not a whole number of minutes, the tool rounds to the nearest minute.
Minutes to decimal
To convert only minutes, leave the hours blank and type the minutes. 90 minutes becomes 1.50 hours. For a lookup of every minute from 0 to 59, use the Decimal Hours Chart.
Tenth-hour and quarter-hour time
Some employers record time in tenths of an hour, where each step is 6 minutes, or in quarters, where each step is 15 minutes. That is a recording rule, not a different formula. A tenth-hour system writes 0.1 for any time that falls in that 6 minute step, so it may not match an exact conversion. Use whichever rounding your payroll provider documents.
Three steps
- Pick a direction.
- Type your hours and minutes, or your decimal hours.
- Read the result and the formula with your numbers.

Follow your employer's instructions, because systems differ on rounding. A common method is to convert each day's total to two decimal places and add them. About this calculator
The conversion here is plain arithmetic. Hours and minutes to decimal is the minutes divided by 60, added to the hours. Decimal to hours and minutes is the decimal part times 60, rounded to the nearest minute. I tested it with 2 hours 15 minutes (2.25), 8.2 hours (8:12), 90 minutes (1.50) and 0.333 hours (20 minutes).
This is arithmetic, so no outside rule is cited. If your payroll provider rounds to tenths or quarters of an hour, follow their rule, because it can differ from an exact conversion.
